Audacity solutions:

  • Record or import recordings into Audacity.
  • If volume is too low, apply compression and normalization to increase volume.
  • Mix recordings to fade-in/fade-out selections.

Non-Audacity solutions:

Free or low cost:

  • Use equipment you own or can borrow.

Commercial:

  • If recording, use a microphone meant for plugging directly into the computer.
  • For microphones meant to plug into a device containing a pre-amplifier, for more volume:
    • Connect microphone (USB or 3.5mm connector) to a recorder (which has a pre-amplifier at the microphone jack location).
    • Connect the recorder to the computer for direct transfer of the recording.
  • Alternatively, connect a microphone to a USB pre-amplifier or audio interface to boost recording volume.
  • Purchase an adapter to connect 6.5mm or XLR equipment to a computer’s USB or 3.5mm input jack.
